Shazam! (2019) Review
Now this review proper diverges from my previous 3 that have been more Oscar worth movies and now I review Shazam! a generic Hollywood superhero movie (which isn't a bad thing) but it does make it a lot harder to review.
This is a film I wanted to see at the cinema and completely missed. This low grossing DCEU movie was really enjoyable, fun and had a more of a clear theme throughout the movie compared to other iterations (except Wonderwoman). It was a really enjoyable watch and I had a lot of fun watching it and did find myself laughing more than I expected.
A newly fostered young boy in search of his mother instead finds unexpected super powers and soon gains a powerful enemy.
Whilst I have a lot of positive thoughts about this movie, I also have one major criticism. It is too formulaic. Don’t get me wrong I really did enjoy this movie however, I didn’t feel like it was coherent and the characters and what they were doing was driving the story and therefore I thought it felt a bit forced instead of characters realising they had to do something they just kind of did it. This happens throughout the movie other than one bit at the end when Billy realises the villain can actually be hurt. One moment of character that I really enjoyed was when the family went to go find Billy who went on the run. Each character was getting sorted in their own way, Darla especially.
This film knew exactly what it was, it knew it was a superhero movie with a silly origin story and it played into that well with the comedic tone of the movie. I found this movie a lot funnier than I was expecting with the odd joke every now and then really making me laugh. But one thing I was really surprised by was the visual comedy in this movie and it was executed very well, especially when Shazam! And the villain was having a conversation when they stopped flying.
Other than that, I don’t have a lot to comment about the movie except maybe the third act was a bit too long.
Overall, I rate this movie: 3/5.
